Also called “Cape Town’s Golden Mile” or the “Muizenberg Mile”, I discovered this St James Coastal Walk on the capetownmagazine.com website in first year (2014) when I was googling fun activities around Cape Town for cheap people (student budget troubles). This walk then spent 2 full years on my imaginary bucket list until the April break in 2016 after a super stressful first term. It took me at least 3 hours deciding on what equipment I should carry with me. I was going to be riding on a public train and I’m very paranoid when it comes to getting robbed, and didn’t want to carry too much stuff along on such a beautiful walk along the coast. After starring at the equipment for a while I decided to carry the following:
- Canon EOS 500D
- Canon EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III
- Plastic fantastic! also known as the Canon EF50mm f/1.8 II
- Sliding sling camera strap
I wanted to try out street photography! This isn’t easy at all! Imagine some random dude taking a picture of you just minding your own business. That’s damn creepy. I was also tempted to challenge myself and take just the 50mm f/1.8 but I knew I was going to need a wide angle lens. I mean, it’s a coastal walk in Cape Town… there are going to be breathtaking landscape scenes.
I set off on my solo journey. Free train ride. I guess no one works on Easter Friday. I’m chilling there and along came this mother with her beautiful twins (boy and girl about 4-5 years old).
They were the cutest kids ever! I felt like such a creep just looking at them fighting over who should look out the windows and I’m there just smiling like an idiot. I mean, look at them! Before you start wondering, yes I did ask the mother for permission to take pictures of them. My trip was off to an good start!
I arrived at the Muizenberg Train station at around 1330. It was not as busy as it usually would be on a Friday afternoon. The weather was amazing! It was warm and partly cloudy and there is arguably no better lighting than the sun with it’s massive diffuser!
The walk was about 45 minutes, much shorter than I had anticipated but I still enjoyed it either way. Check out the rest of the pictures I took below. The whole set of pictures is here on Flickr.
